How to Use Link Baiting In Your Link Building Campaign
10.22.09 (11:51 am)   [edit]
Generating traffic is what most websites seek for. One of the methods used by webmasters is to link their sites to others in order to gain more traffic known as link building. More website owners depend on link building such that they have to beg big website owners to link to them. Others pursue the harder way by writing so many articles to generate clicks.

However, if you have one of those websites publishing good quality content, chances are you could make use of link baiting. Webmasters would actually be the ones running after you for a link to them from your site, since your website boasts of well written and informative content that would interest web users and is authoritative.

You may be wondering, what is link baiting? This method is very easy to understand and would certainly generate a high traffic for your site. Link baiting is actually bait or a trap such that other webmasters flock towards your site because they see that your site is useful to them.  The key here is to have a very good compilation of articles that is not only informative, entertaining and useful but unique as well. This way, other webmasters will be looking for you and your articles. They would be the one to ask you to allow them to link your site to them. This may seem hard at first but if you would only have a good strategy and an expert writer, chances are this method may actually work for you.

Like any other strategies that seek to generate traffic, search engines play a major role in order for you to pull off this strategy. You have to remember that it is through search engines that web users and webmasters find your works. Although you can be found in search engines through SEO practices and back linking, you wouldn’t want to do this forever.

Furthermore, link baiting does not only give you a high traffic and high page rank but a high PR as well. If you have finally gotten with the flow, this strategy might work best for you.

Now that you know the concept of link baiting, it is important for you to focus on your content. Not all articles would catch the attention of your web users; hence it is important that you produce only those catchy but well written pieces.

There are different approaches in writing an article. It could be in the form of a serious news article or a light and breezy leisure article. There are the “How to” articles or those tackling current event issues. You may also stir the emotions of the readers by tackling issues that has been making national concerns. These and some more are simple ways that can help you generate good hits that would help you establish your strategy in link baiting.

Now that you know this simple strategy, remember that it may also take a hard work before you can successfully use link baiting. Always make sure that you are posting articles that are unique and informative. Patience is a virtue and opportunities for improvement will always be there. Your desired result may not always be outright but rest assured that this would go a long way for your business once you have established your connection.

Link Boosting to Increase Link Popularity
09.27.09 (7:34 pm)   [edit]
A common goal among web site owners is to improve their site's page ranking in as many search engines as possible. There are many ways to achieve this goal. One way is link boosting. Link boosting is when a web site owner uses links designed for their own site to gain popularity and rank higher among search engines. Web site owners use inbound links to increase their link popularity.

Inbound links are hyperlinks on web pages that lead to another web site. They are very helpful in terms of SEO, and it is important that inbound links are on sites that are high quality, high ranking, and relate to the content of the original page. If the inbound links meet these criteria, your campaign to improve your site's page ranking will also bring more quality traffic to your site therefore increasing your profit margin. If you are unsure what a high ranking website is, this is easily solved by downloading a ranking tool bar, which can easily be found online (and most of them are free), or going to Alexa.com which provides fantastic information on site ranking.

There are many different sources a web site owner can use to place their web site links on another page. These sources can include:

* Press releases - online news articles published on sites such as prweb.com

* Online articles - written reports published on sites such as goarticles.com

* E-zines - magazines published online and distributed through e-mail or a web site

* Discussion groups - online forums, users can post comments on a variety of topics

* Social networking sites - an online site where users create a profile and connect with other users such as MySpace.com, Facebook.com, and blogs.

Each of these sources provide a way to circulate a particular web site around the internet. The more sources used the more traffic clicks on that web page. Inbound links are just one way to optimize a web page, and are becoming extremely valid in relation to the above marketing activities. You really can't afford to miss out on these.

Although the sources mentioned above are extremely effective and very simple, traffic will be generated at a slow, steady pace which is ideal. Traffic increasing at a slower steadier pace will ensure that your site does not get flagged by search engines. Jumping from zero links to 1000 links quickly may alert some search engines that something suspicious may be going on which in turn may cause your website to be flagged. I am still recommending cross-linking using the avenues above, but I am just recommending caution in your strategy to make sure this is at a steady pace, consistent Computer Technology Articles, and long-term.

Linking With Integrity - Avoid Being Labeled a Link Spammer
08.22.09 (1:00 pm)   [edit]
Have you started your link building campaign? Are you afraid you might post your link in the wrong place? Read on to find out how taking simple steps can help you avoid being labeled a link spammer.

It's just as important to know what not to do when executing a website linking strategy as it is to know what to do. With inexpensive linking software and services so readily available, there's a strong temptation to take shortcuts when it comes to getting quality links. Avoiding these traps will help your search engine placements rise naturally and stay that way for a long time. In this article, I describe two ways that you can help yourself avoid being labeled a link spammer.

Link Farms

What is a link farm?  A link farm is any website designed and set up for the sole purpose of getting search engine spiders to crawl and index web pages. These websites provide absolutely no end user utility or benefit.

So how do you recognize a link farm?  First, you need to ask yourself, is this site heavy laden with links? Most link farms will have a "farm" of links with little to no content. As for an explanation of the site's existence, it's usually missing too.

The next question you need to ask is, what does the URL of the site itself look like?  Most of the time, link farms will have long, hyphenated URLs (i.e. our-great-linking-directo ry.com). This is a generalization so not all link farms will have these types of URLs.  Many of these link farms are generated using software. The software will go out and find a domain name that contains specific keywords even if it settles on something with several hyphens and numbers. You may still consider a long, hyphenated site for linking purposes but make certain you conduct more research before you submit a link.

Next, look at the domain name extension and note if it's .info or .biz.  In order to sell these extensions, many domain name registrars offer a one-time, deep discount.  I know of several registrars that sell .info domains for 89 cents per year.  These cheap domain names allow spammers to generate thousands of sites at a huge discount.

The next criteria I use to help identify a link farm is what I call the "cheese factor".  Although some link farms will look professionally designed, most are either 1) generated with software or 2) are designed with the same cookie-cutter, non-altered templates that fill search engine results.  This is especially true with blogs.  Spammers and Internet newbies will not take the time to brand their websites or blogs. These are commonly referred to as "pump and dump" websites.

Another question you should ask is, does it look human?  That is, does it look like someone hangs around and takes care of things? You should also be able to contact the webmaster either via web form or e-mail.  If there's no contact information available anywhere on the website, be very afraid.

If it's a directory site, check out the links in a few of the main directory headings.  Are the URLs hyphenated just like the main URL? If you visit one of these sites, does it look the same as the site you just came from?  Are there more URLs crammed onto one page than anyone could possibly visit in a lifetime?

Last but not least, if you have your suspicions that a site might be a link farm, for any reason, stay away.  It's better to miss a great linking opportunity than to post your link and get downgraded in your search engine placements.

Non-relevant Links

When you're placing your links, you want to make sure that the site you're linking to has something to do with your own site and, vice versa.

A non-relevant link is defined as a hypertext link placed on a website, or in a directory, that has little to no relevance to the linking site or directory.  These links are placed for the sole purpose of 1) increasing page rank  or 2) getting a website crawled and indexed or a combination of the two.

The most obvious way to combat not-relevant links, over which you have complete control, is the placement of links on your own site.  Avoid placing links on your own site to another that has no relevance to your content; even if it's a legitimate.  Why?  The link doesn't do anything for you or the person whose link you placed.  On the other hand, don't ask someone to place a link on their site which doesn't relate to yours.

Google, Yahoo, and MSN all look closely at whom you're linking to and who's linking to you.  In fact, Google's PageRank definition specifically states that link relevance (quality) is looked at more than just the link itself.

So what's the solution?  As in researching a potential link farm, you need to check out the sites that are you're linking to.  If you're submitting your site to directories or article directories, make sure that you're submitting your content and links to the most relevant topics and sections.

Don't worry about getting an exact match in terms of relevance between your site and the linking site; just make sure that each site complements the other.

Know the Linking Pitfalls

In summary, you can be accused of being a link spammer even if you think you haven't done anything wrong.  To keep your linking strategy clean, I've outlined two specific techniques that will keep your site safe with the search engines.

First, watch out for unscrupulous link directories and sites (i.e. link farms).  Use the techniques and ask yourself the questions I've outlined to recognize and avoid these harmful sites.

Second, make sure you're posting to relevant sites/directories/article s/blogs or wherever you choose to submit your content and links.

Most importantly, if you think you might get accused of being a spammer, by attempting to use a linking technique you just read about or software you just bought, trust your gut and don't do it.  Linking software creators claim that you can get thousands of back links with the press of a button or for only "$49".  The only way to get good quality back links is to do the research yourself and hand-submit every single link.

If you avoid these two traps, you'll be well on your way to getting the links you need to get your website placed higher in search results and, as a result, generate more sales.

Link Building and Its Natural Behaviour
07.15.09 (10:11 pm)   [edit]
Many webmasters believe that link harvesting is all about gaining as many links to the home page as possible, with the primary keyword as the anchor text. They give no thought to how the search engines perceive this activity and fail to understand why their rankings don't improve. This article describes tactics to employ and avoid when working on your link building campaign.

Effective link building is a complex affair and can be an extremely time consuming and laborious task. However quality links are extremely powerful and a constant flow of incoming links is essential for any website hoping to compete in the search engine marketplace. When building links you should always be careful not to represent unnatural link behaviour. Failure to do so may see you link building efforts wasted.

So how do you avoid being flagged as a site that participates in unnatural linking behaviour? Here are a few key pointers you should keep at the forefront of your mind when building links:

Deep Linking

Google will give more weight to a site with 500 links all pointing to different pages on a site than it will a site with 750 links all pointing to the homepage.

Link exchange programs can be used to acquire high volumes of links in an effort to boost rankings. The traits of a website that participates in such a program are a high percentage of inbound links all pointing to the same destination URL.

Just like any other tactic that becomes popular it often finds itself being abused by unethical SEO’s. And just like with previous tactics, such as stuffing the meta keywords tag, the major search engines adjust their algorithms to filter out websites that employ these tactics from their results.

Even if you don’t participate in such a program, you should be mindful that your inbound links don’t all point to the homepage if you want to avoid triggering such filters.Another point to consider is that, with natural links, a website has little control over where an external site links to. Natural links will often link to a page deep in the websites structure.

Varying Anchor Text

Many webmasters believe that the more keyword rich anchor text links to the target page the better. Wrong! As discussed, when a site acquires links naturally they have little control over where the external site links to. This is the same for the anchor text of natural links i.e. the webmaster has little control of the anchor text of natural inbound links.

If you build high volumes of inbound links with duplicated anchor text you may be signalling to the search engines that there is unnatural linking activity. A high percentage of duplicated anchor text is also another trait of websites that participate in link exchange programs.

Of course it would be madness not to use your keywords in the anchor text of inbound links but to avoid triggering filters you should use variations of your keywords. If your site is about Link Building then, by all means, build links with that phrase in the anchor text, but also build links with the terms "Links", "Building Links", "Linking Services", "Linking Strategies", "One-way links" and "Inbound Links" in the anchor text.

Balancing the Equation

There are many ways you can acquire links including Blogs, forum signatures, reciprocal links, articles, directories, press releases, link worthy content, site-wides, buying links and social media marketing, to name but a few. It is highly likely that a website with compelling content will also acquire links from a variety of these sources. It will have press releases announcing new content, articles reviewing the site, listings in trusted directories and communities will be discussing the site in Blogs and forums.

A site that acquires links unnaturally may have a high percentage of links from article resource boxes or reciprocating sites. To avoid being picked out as a site that participates in unnatural linking behavior you should ensure your site has inbound links from as many of these different types of source as possible.

Summary

Always ensure you have inbound links from a wide variety of sources to avoid triggering unnatural linking filters. Constantly analysis your back links and compare the types of links against each other. If you find you have no links from Blogs, then go off and start participating in a relevant Blog discussion. If you notice there has been no recent news about your site then write a press release announcing the great new feature you have just added for your users. And if you notice that all of your links are from the same source i.e. reciprocal, then build more links from other sources to balance the equation. In all cases vary the anchor text and the destination URL of inbound links.

What is Viral Link building & Its Use of Correct Linking Text!
07.15.09 (10:08 pm)   [edit]
With link building you are always looking to get the best quality links for your effort or even the efforts of others.

Multiplying the work of others is a great way to get more results with less work. At the same time varying your anchor text in the right way can have a good effect, if done in the right way.

I always like to watch what others are doing in building links and qualified traffic to a site. Joel Comm has been around online for quite a few years having set up a games site before selling it to Yahoo!

His latest project in the next internet millionaire- A reality online TV program, with a similarity to the Apprentice - Hey if it works well on normal TV, why note take it online in a niche area.

Not all that niche, just those who want to make money online.

His superstar contest included using the contest itself to create traffic- pretty smart. For example he firstly used the contestants to put videos up on youtube and get the friends to vote for each of them at the next internet millionaire site.

Then, in exchange for a listing on the superstars page at the site (which is no longer visible from the home page), you needs to take a number of actions in which you gain points.

To get listed on the site you needed to gain at least 50 points. Since the maximum points you could gain per action was 10, you had to perform at least 5 actions to get listed. How is that for a multi linking/traffic strategy?

These actions included:

#1) "Digg" the video. – A vote for the site at the social networking site Digg.com

#2) Rate the video at YouTube- The more good rating the video gets, then the higher it gets up the rating, the more stars then the more people see it and it ends up on the home page of YouTube

#3) Embed the video somewhere in a site- Easiest option is blog so also the site would mostly get a normal link to the site as well. (I found a few like that)

#4) Link to them- A normal link to the site, which gets you 10 point. If you complete this task, you are qualified to enter the Ipod giveaway contest- A nice incentive

#5) Tell your friends and family – He asks them to "pass on the information" on.

#6) Become a MySpace friend. [5 points] – In which you ask to become a friend of there Myspace site

#7) Visit the Squidoo page. [5 points] This is a very quick task. Just go to the Squidoo page (called a "Squidoo lens") and give us a 5 star rating.

#8) Stumble Upon Us. [5 points] Install the super cool StumbleUpon toolbar. After you've installed it, need to go to the website and while you're on the site, give it a "thumbs up" on your StumbleUpon toolbar, and click the "comment on this page" button to give it a good review.

#9) Submit a Press Release. [25 points] This is only for people who have auditioned for the show. You can help them and get free publicity for yourself at the same time by submitting a press release to the media about your involvement with our show!

If you look at the list you will see he has aimed at the search traffic with normal links, the social market using myspace and youtube as well as traditional marketing using press releases.

This is sure to bring loads of traffic from all areas of the net. If you were to apply any or all of the strategies above, with a view to getting natural search engine traffic (which most likely wasn't his major goal) then I would suggest the following change: A focus on varied links text.

Here's what I mean –Its unnatural for ALL the links to your site to have * exactly * the same text in the links. Its unlikely to happen, at the same time you don't want to confuse Google. You site is about one subject, so you want to focus around that subject. Lets look a practical example.

A web site sells "Dog Clothes" online- you would want the links to your site to be something like this

Dog clothes- majority of links Designer Dog clothes – some of your links Small Dog clothes –the rest of your links.

You see that's very logical, also you will get some people who will link to your site with your URL which is also to be expected. You have kept the base keyword and then add the next most likely keyword. Make sense doesn't it?

So when you are looking to build links to your site, especially for the primary purpose of search engine ranking, keep in mind the base keyword and any words that can build off that base keyword.

At the same time, looking at what Joel Comm has done, what reason can you provide for your visitors to work for you, link to you, how much value can you provide for them to link to your site.
